My Students
Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
Have you ever tried to work in a classroom where someone was working on a computer, and the sound was blasting? Imagine this scenario with more than one computer when you're trying to read! This scenario is what is currently happening in my classroom. As a Language Arts teacher, my students work in small groups and independent centers throughout the day to support their literacy development. Right now, one of these centers allows students to access online typing practice, reading assignments, and phonics programs.
Given that my students do not have enough headphones for all of the computers in my classroom, this creates a loud and distracting environment.
I am requesting a set of 10, high-quality headphones that will help all students focus on the work their assigned work. These devices will ensure that those working on a computer stay focused on themselves and that others will continue to operate independently without being disturbed by noise.
We use computers every single day, so please consider supporting us so we can develop a calmer, more focused space. I am looking forward to showing students how language arts can connect to technology!
