My Students

My school consists of 99% Somali students. The majority of them grow up in a household where more than one language is spoken, and their parents do not always speak English. Some children do not attend formal schooling before attending kindergarten and lack basic supplies at home.

My Project

At my school, we are currently teaching hybrid-style. In the classroom, the students use their computers during guided reading time for centers, and only a few students have a pair of headphones. Occasionally, they forget to bring them. The school does not have that many extras to spare.

Headphones would be useful to keep the classroom volume levels low during literacy center time and allow students to concentrate on their work.

This time is when I do my guided reading instruction and hearing the students' computers going off constantly would be very distracting.

I would also allow my students to utilize these headphones at home. Some of my students have large families and may live in a smaller home, and when they unmute to answer a question, I notice that some of their houses are very active and loud. This most likely affects their ability to concentrate. I had a few parents tell me that they are not able to purchase any headphones.

This project would supply each student one pair of headphones, plus some extra in case any go missing, are left at home one day or become broken.
