Each time I tell someone I'm a middle school teacher, peoples first reaction is usually sympathetic, or at best relief that it is me dealing with the unpredictable young adolescents, and not them. However, my experience has taught me that the stigma of dealing with hormonal teenagers and the rewarding reality of teaching them are two very different things.
Students in my community have been through so much in these past few years.
During some of their most formative academic experiences, they have dealt with historic and unprecedented circumstances that many adults are struggling to recover from. The world around them has been subject to divisive and escalating challenges. In spite of these tests, my students have maintained their dignity, their humor, and their respect for others.
It is often easy for my generation to dismiss today's students as callous or indifferent. When in reality, today's students are capable of great and wonderful things when provided the opportunity to do so. That is why I'm here at DonorsChoose, to provide my students with greater opportunities to prove their value and improve their learning.
My Project
With the ongoing challenges of learning during Covid exposure quarantines, students do not often have reliable headphones to listen to lessons or to engage with content that is posted virtually. These headphones would help to make an everyday challenge no longer an issue.
Technology is a constantly utilized resource in the modern classroom.
While our district provides 1:1 laptops to support student learning, accessories must be supplied by families. As a result, students who cannot afford their headphones are often inconvenienced when independent or virtual work necessitates the use of them.
