For over twenty years, I have had the privilege of teaching at the same title one school. At our school 98% of our children are economically disadvantaged. Though our children may come from caring homes, they face great struggles. Their challenges range from a lack of food, caring for younger siblings, parents with two jobs, and limited exposure to language and technology.
My students are hardworking, and regardless of their struggles, have the greatest desire to succeed and choose to do the best they can each day.
Yet, for many of my students our classroom is the only opportunity they have to experience an environment that is both safe and supportive of their learning. I am working to create a 21st Century classroom that stands from everything that they need to succeed in life.
The majority of my students begin the school year working below grade level in reading, writing and math. Studies show that this may be due in part to a lack of quality language building opportunities at home. Therefore, it is necessary for our classrooms to offer opportunities to develop language through quality interaction and instruction.
My students are in need of a class set of headphones and noise blocker earmuffs for reading, writing and math instruction to improve student achievement and concentration.
Throughout the day students are receiving differentiated instruction, time for silent reading, working independently and online computer based intervention programs. At times, the students require limited noise distractions to maintain their focus. The online programs used create individualized instruction per student in which students are required to listen and interact, therefore requiring the use of headphones. These items would help us maintain a quality learning environment.
