Ms. Madara from Philadelphia PA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students durable headphones to support their focus and progress with technology during math and literacy centers!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school was founded in 2016 with a group of 100 students in a small basement located in the heart of West Philly (an under-served and impoverished area of the city). Since then, we have grown to serve about 400 students in grades K-3. We are on a mission to prove that zip codes do not define a child's destiny. Every day we exemplify what it means to be a team and family; we “work hard and be nice.”
As the founding class of students in our school, the Class of 2029 is the trailblazer and leader in our building.
These students are resilient, loving, gritty, curious, and brave! They work unbelievably hard each day and show love to friends and teachers. In our classroom, students are starting the climb up the mountain all the way to college in 2029! My hope is that our students can be prepared to leave the world better than they found it.
Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, my students have daily access to Chromebooks, iPads, and Microsoft Go tablets in our classroom! Every day, our students use a curriculum-based math program called Zearn; students are able to view video lessons, practice problem examples, and increase fluency while reinforcing math skills and concepts being taught in class. It's an amazing program that bridges math and technology, but it requires students to truly focus in and listen to directions to be successful.
Many of my students have diagnosed deficits related to attention and listening comprehension, so it can be tough for them to do well on tasks when competing with background noises.
Our third-grade classroom, by nature of our age-group, can be noisy enough with almost thirty students hard at work. Access to headphones would allow my students to tune in to what they are doing, without the distracting sounds of peers, other technology, or small-group instruction. Headphones will provide all students with a noise buffer that is needed for independent work and learning center activities. Please consider helping my students focus on and understand different math tasks with the gift of headphones!
