My 40+ students are English Language Learners from diverse and low economic background. They range from ages 6- 11 and grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. They are eager to learn not only the academic content but also about the culture. About 82% of the school's population is Hispanic. We are situated in a high poverty area in the city of Oklahoma. W. Elementary is a Title one inner city school. Nearly all students are from low-income households, everyone in our school is on free or reduced lunch. Most of my students do not have access to a computer or tablet at home. Their families rely on the technology we have at school. Unfortunately, we don't have enough technology in our building to support our student's learning and prepare them for the future.
My Project
My ELL students need headphones to listen to read aloud books and be able to concentrate without the noise around them. Many times their parents don't speak English so they can't read to my students at home. These headphones will also allow me to individualize their learning by assigning online lessons. The headphones will also allow the rest of the class to stay focused on what they are working without the noise from the computers or chromebooks. Students love to use comfortable headphones that are designed for little minds. The right headphones can also make them more excited about learning.
