My Students

Idaho City is the remnant of an old mining town. The population stays around 500 people, and opportunities can be limited. Many students bus to school from surrounding neighborhoods and more than half of them qualify for free and reduced lunches. Many local families struggle to meet their basic needs, and a great number of students get more from the school than their families can provide, and some may never venture outside this area. School is their gateway to the world, but we often don’t have enough funding to provide them with the learning tools they need to truly thrive.

My students are fighters and will find opportunities for learning wherever they can, and my goal is to make that fight a little easier.

My Project

With a strong focus on technology in education, it can be difficult for rural schools to keep up. Our school is striving to provide students access to learning technology many cannot access at home, but the budget is limited and the needs are great.

Providing my class with a set of headphones will allow them to use online learning programs, such as iStation, without relying on parents to provide yet another school supply.

If students can focus on their online learning, they will be able to retain high quality information while learning digital skills that directly apply to their future.
