My students need headphones so they can focus on individual academic goals without disturbing others when working on iPads. I use iPads to differentiate learning when I am not meeting with students in a small group.

My Students
I have the privilege of working with a very diverse group of students. 90% of students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. About 50% speak another language at home. My students are sweet, caring, and energetic.
First graders have an innate desire to learn.
As an educator, it is my job to provide them with the resources to help quench their thirst for knowledge. I must provide students with meaningful experiences and information that will later help them find their way in the world.
My Project
New headphones would be a great addition to my classroom. Students complain that they can not hear with the headphones I currently have in the classroom. Most of my headphones do not work or are starting to have problems. When the headphones do not work, students are not able hear instructions for activities, listen to books that interest them, or pursue individual interests on classroom-approved websites.
First graders like to have some independence in their learning.
Each student has different interests. Generally first graders can't read everything you put in front of them, particularly struggling readers. They need access to books that interest them to keep them motivated, but also need some additional support. Headphones will allow them to listen and gain access to books that interest them. There is a website my class uses that allows children to choose the types of books they want to read, but if the headphones are not working students unplug them. Then it gets loud and the students have a difficult time concentrating on the book they chose. Headphones will allow my students to engage in learning independently while also giving students an opportunity to have a choice. As a result, students will be more motivated to learn and develop their literacy skills.
Headphones will also allow students to grow in other academic areas. There are many math and phonics apps on the iPads, but it is hard for students to use them because our headphones don't work. I know my students would really appreciate some new headphones.
