Do you remember the feeling of graduating high school? Of walking that stage with your family cheering for you as you received your diploma? Our school is trying to make that feeling a reality for students who are on the verge of dropping out of school or who have struggled in high school.
My students come from all kinds of walks of life, but are predominantly students of color who have fallen through the cracks of traditional schooling.
Most are from low-income backgrounds. Many are foster youth, others have struggled with gang affiliations, and most have had serious struggles in their family lives. ALL desperately want to make a change in their lives and earn their diploma. Many want to continue on to college to further their education.
They attend our school and take online accelerated classes in order to make up the credits they are missing. They come into class for four hour sessions and also work at home. Our school is small (under 200 students) but we do our best to give them a family environment that is full of encouragement for what they can achieve.
My Project
My students do all their school work on computers by using an online learning curriculum. The curriculum that they use has the option to have sections of their course work read to them as they follow along. This tremendously increases their comprehension of the material and also reduces eye strain of having to read everything on the computer screen. The online curriculum also uses video clips and audio games etc. Without headphones students will not be able to take advantage of the audio components of the curriculum. There are 30 students in class at one time so they cannot play audio through the computer without headphones as it will disrupt the learning of other students.

Through success with their classes, they can reach their ultimate goal of earning their diploma and becoming high school graduates. For many students, they will be the first ones in their family to reach this goal.
