My first graders are energetic and creative little people and are always excited to take part in new experiences. My students love to read and are very proud of themselves at the end of the year when they realize how far they've come! A lot of my students are raised by grandparents or in a single parent home. The majority of these students receive free lunch and due to their low socioeconomic status, these families are not financially able to help supply things for the classroom.
My Project
My students need headphones for our classroom computers. These computers are used daily during our Must Do May Do center time. The headphones that we are currently using were purchased by me several years ago and are beginning to "wear out."
My students need hands-on building materials for STEM boxes that we can use during our Must Do May Do center time.
The Magformer tiles and Legos will give students opportunities to use their creative thinking skills to build an object, and will also help to develop their fine motor skills while both assembling and deconstructing their creation. The requested velcro dots will allow students to attach craft sticks, to make more permanent structures that will match those on the task cards.
Clear Sterilite bins will allow us to store all of these items so that they are always organized but visible and available to the students when they are ready to take part in some STEM activities.
First grade students learn better when they are given opportunities for hands-on learning. These STEM bins will include items and task cards that directly relate to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Giving students STEM opportunities will not only give them a break from pencil and paper work, but will give them the opportunity to be creative and experiment with their engineering skills.
