My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world."-Gandhi This quote is displayed on a large bulletin board as you walk through my classroom door. I want to show my students that if they want to change something, do it! They have the power to change and they can influence others.

There are 250 students.

They are at-risk youth between the ages of 16-20. 99% of the student population qualify for Chicago's free lunch program, which means they are either homeless or come from a home that makes well under a livable salary. It is a big challenge for the staff to motivate our students to come to school and keep them off the streets. The supplies at our school are very limited and the teachers do their best to encourage and motivate the students to get a proper education. Many of my students come to this school as a last chance to get their high school diploma. We have many students that were kicked out of their last school. They realized the necessity of obtaining at least a secondary education. We are an arts based school that emphasizes the need to integrate art into every subject to inspire and motivate the students.

My Project

This will be a great break from the classroom, while still learning! Students in America take their education for granted. I am hoping that they will see He Named Me Malala, and it will spark much discussion about the value of education and revisit their purpose for their motivation to get their education.

Hopefully, this will be an inspirational trip for all of the students.

I want to take the lessons from Malala and use her all year long as an example. I hope it will help them appreciate the things that they take for granted.
