This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every time the clouds darken over Plainfield, my students freeze. They’ve lived through storms that took neighbors’ lives and flooded playgrounds where they play every day. When thunder rolls, they glance toward the windows not because they’re curious, but because they’re remembering. Even in clear weather, I end dismissal the same way: “Look both ways.” Someone’s always almost getting hit. Safety has become a daily prayer.

But these kids are tired of being scared and they want to build the solution themselves.

Our Hawk Makers STEM Studio will give them the power to do exactly that... to turn fear into action and design into protection. With a Glowforge laser cutter, students will craft reflective, bilingual stop signs for drills and crossings. The Cricut and EasyPress will help them make bright flood-awareness and safety markers for our community. With a 3D printer and Apple iMac, they’ll design prototypes, test ideas, and learn that STEM isn’t just a subject but it’s a form of self-defense, of civic pride, of hope.

The workbench, starter materials, and safety gear will transform a regular classroom into a real innovation lab where students learn to engineer the world they want to live in.

This project isn’t about gadgets. It’s about giving young people control over something no one can control and teaching them that even when they can’t stop the storm, they can still build something strong enough to stand through it.
