Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school district embraces the inclusion model for students in special education. Many students in special ed spend their day in general education classes, with special educators pushing in to teach, co-teach, and support all students. Special education placements are not "one-size-fits-all" though, which is where classes like mine fit in. We are a special day class, which means my students spend a large amount of time in my small group setting, and are included in general education activities when appropriate. Every learner has unique needs, and my 7 little learners are definitely unique.

I have the honor of seeing so many 'firsts' with my learners- the first time they read independently, the first time they legibly write their name, or count to 10, or remember their birthday .

. the list goes on and on. The students were previously lost in the shuffle of general education classrooms and resource programs. They were overwhelmed in big classes and had too many transitions. They have very significant learning and attention problems, communication challenges, and sensory processing issues as well. In our small group setting, we can provide all that they need for them to blossom into lifelong learners.

My Project

My students have very short attention spans as well as sensory integration issues. They need a variety of seating options to keep their bodies tuned into the task before them. Their sensory processing systems crave input that these types of chairs provide.

These lap desks, ball chairs, and wobble cushions, will help their bodies and brains learn to work together.

It is amazing to see how much more focus my students exhibit when they are given tools such as these to silence the 'itch' in their bodies telling them that they just gotta move! Right now I have one yoga ball and a few home-made squishy cushions. Having access to quality items will help my students tremendously.
