Have A Seat In The Art Room

My students need sturdy stools to replace broken and battered chairs in the art room and to help with their posture while creating art.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine creating masterpieces slouched back in old curved back plastic chairs? Most of those chairs have uneven legs causing students to wobble, cracked or broken seats pinching their legs, and my little ones can't even reach the table top sitting in them!

I teach at an urban K-8 school in Philadelphia.

The school is Title I and part of a district suffering from major cutbacks and funding issues. My students all come from low socioeconomic status households and all receive free lunch at school. The district does not have the means whatsoever to provide a budget for our classrooms, and since I have been there, I have spent a lot of my own money and raised other donations as well to help provide art materials for my empty classroom. All students, no matter what their background or where they live, deserve an equitable chance at education and art education! It breaks my heart that my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage due to no fault of their own. These kids are bright, creative, and excited to learn more in art, and no matter what struggles they face at home, they still wake up and come to school every day. They are stronger than they know and deserve much more than they are handed. My school is is full of amazing children.

My Project

The stools would help them to maintain a better posture during their 45 minute art class. They also would be at a better height advantage to the table for creating their art work, whereas currently in the plastic chairs, they sit very low to the ground, with some kids struggling to reach supplies and their art work. The stools are sturdy and long lasting, so they are perfect for the art room and should not fall apart like the plastic chairs. It's very hard for a student to be focused on their art if they are slouch back in the chair or constantly battling the chair. Having the stools will allow students to create art in a more natural position. In addition, stools are more mobile in the art room for group critiques, and also easier to stack for room cleaning. Bottom line, my old broken chairs badly need replacing and after much thought and research I have decided stools are the best option for my level of students.

My students lives will change because their art will change.

They will be able to actually see and do more in their art. I also believe there is in impact in my population of students when they walk into a room with new furniture. Gone are the chairs that use to pinch and poke them, and replaced with something nice and new. It shows them that someone cares enough about them to replace something as simple as a chair. It's also a learning opportunity to teach them how to respect new things.
