As an English teacher at my school who also has started a school library, I interact with most of the students who flood our halls. Sixth through ninth grades mostly use my classroom library which I have grown to the point where the entire school can check books out without fear of emptying the shelves. The library is also available to the tenth through twelfth grades. My goal is to have books available to every student in our school. I have recently added a bookmobile which has resulted in increased interest in the library.
As my library has grown, I have noticed certain students like to stay awhile when they come in to browse.
These students are eager to read, and over the past couple of years, I have been able to create a space and provide the resources needed to make a library for our students. This means a lot to our students who are avid readers, and it also encourages those who are developing an interest in independent reading.
My Project
Since our school library is actually the perimeter of my entire classroom, I would like to add some flexible seating to make it more welcoming to those who pop in to use my classroom as the school library. I know students need to spend quality time with books before deciding on which one to read. I believe adding flexible seating will make this a reality for students.
By adding stools to my classroom library, students will feel invited and welcome to stay awhile.
This will encourage them to spend time looking through the shelves which will allow them to find that just-right book.
