As students at an arts-focused middle school, my students benefit from opportunities to dance, draw, act, and perform on a daily basis. We have focused as a school community on using our precious school funding to support those endeavors, but that leaves little for other materials.
My task as their Language Arts teacher is to teach these creative thinkers that reading and writing are also arts - ones that they will use on a daily basis, no matter where their lives will take them.
As students coming from all over the city, from a variety of neighborhoods, families, and backgrounds, they will take their skills and talents back to their immediate communities to improve life all over the city.
These creative, young minds need all the help they can get to express their thoughts in today's technological world.
This project has two very important parts! The first is a set of four stools that have rounded bottoms, allowing them to wobble and move while a student is sitting. Movement is so necessary for helping many students be able to focus and learn, and these stools allow them to do just that, while reading and writing.
The second part of this project is a refresher for our classroom library.
New, amazing YA and middle grade books come out all the time, and focus on the things our students are interested in reading about. Having these books available in the classroom gets kids excited about reading and removes any barriers to finding the next great read!
