When the package arrived and we unloaded all of the mannequins, the kids were so excited to immediately start pinning things to them. \r\n\r\nRight after the mannequins arrived, students were creating cape pieces for a fashion show. Two of the three mannequins were used in for patterning, display, designing the decoration. Having these pieces helped bridge the learning between two- dimensional sewing and three-dimensional garments.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the year, we host a final art show for the eighth graders. The student created artwork was draped and displayed on the mannequins!! This lent an air professionalism lacking from previous years. Thank you so much for your generous donation. While you may have forgotten it, our class certainly has not. As we packed up the room this last week, my students were so excited to restock our worn out supplies, toss dead markers, and refill the highlighters and colored pencils that were woefully lacking. They were able to see first-hand the wear and tear that 150 middle school students subject materials to, and were glad to be able to reset the room to a better state before they left.\r\n\r\nI know that \"August me\" will be excited all over again when I go to pull out the bins and see them fresh and ready to go for my next group of 8th graders. Getting to relive your generosity, I will think back fondly on all that you've done to help students you don't even know. From children to adults, fewer people are able to read at a level of proficiency, and even fewer are choosing to read for enjoyment. We know that this loss has a negative impact on our society as a whole.\r\n\r\nWhile I cannot guarantee that everyone of my students leaves my class loving reading, what I can promise is that they are each exposed to a wide variety of reading options, conversations, and opportunities to grow as a reader - all things we know have a positive impact on life-long literacy. A huge part of what I can do in the classroom requires having materials that students are excited to try and can't wait to share with their friends.\r\n\r\nYour help and donations make that happen for our students. This is no small feat and I want you to know how much your generous donations mean to our students. Our school library has been reduced to being open approximately 16 minutes per day. Our students can only go check out a book before school or between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd periods. And, with our neighborhood public libraries under construction, they are closed to our students. This is why having a well-stocked classroom library is key to opening the world of reading to our students.\r\n\r\nWith your donation, you are forever a part of my students' reading journey. This means the world to me, but it opens the world to young readers, creating new opportunities for them, and helps them become life-long readers.","fullyFundedDate":1756410958874,"projectUrl":"project/bright-beginnings-start-with-new-books/9611807/","projectTitle":"Bright Beginnings Start with New Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wasson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1072790_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1473653052378","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/s-wasson"},{"teacherId":409519,"projectId":9203042,"letterContent":"As we all know, reading is critical to academic success. The more that a student reads, the more likely they are to be successful in their classes, and pursue learning after graduation. We also know that our students currently have many other options for ways to spend their time, and that reading doesn't always come first.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest ways I have found to combat that issue is to utilize the much-maligned \"peer pressure\". When students see other students that they enjoy and respect reading something, they are much more likely to try it. In class, my students share recommendations and talk about their reading regularly. Making it a part of our near-daily conversations brings an awareness that we wouldn't have otherwise. \r\n\r\nYour help to replace our disintegrating copies of much loved tomes is greatly appreciated.
