My Project

How can teachers and parents support reading? Reading aloud high-quality, eye-catching books can make learning fun and create a bond between the adult and the child. This collection of books for 2-year-olds through 2nd graders was chosen by a committee of librarians and includes poetry, science, folktales, and social-emotional stories with lessons featuring a diverse cast of characters. I have added ten more quality titles just for my students, too. Children will be sure to find something they enjoy reading or listening to as they browse the shelf. In my school, young readers in first and second grade will be able to earn prizes as they read from the Texas 2x2 list of quality picture books, from a cookie party and a trinket with their picture on the Reading Star bulletin board to a movie party or a field trip. Some of the classroom teachers also add a one-pager project linked to this collection, pairing reading and writing as the students learn.

Tomie dePaola said, "A picture book is a small door to the enormous world of the visual arts, and they're often the first art a young person sees."

These beautifully illustrated stories blend the visual arts with the performing arts as they are read aloud creating a feast for the senses. They are a wonderful way to instill a lifelong love of reading in today's visually stimulating world.
