My Students

Who doesn't love going outside for recess? My students love playing outside and they love playing with balls. They love bouncing, kicking, catching, and throwing balls. But, we don't have any balls to take outside!

The children in our classroom are second graders in a rural area at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains.

Many of their parents are out of work and have limited resources. We have many children from Latin American families in our classroom, along with Scotch-Irish and African American families. Our playground only has limited equipment, but we do have access to a large field and blacktop area, where we could play lots of games with footballs, soccer balls, and playground balls.

My Project

Research has shown that recess is an important part of the school day. Getting to exercise and play will not only improve my students' physical fitness, but it will improve their social and academic achievement as well. Having a variety of playground balls will give my students an opportunity to have some choice about their recess activities. Kicking, throwing, bouncing, and catching are skills that second graders are developing and having a ball bag to take outside will give everyone a chance to play and practice.

Recess will be so much better for my students if they have a ball bag to take outside with them. My students will develop exercise habits that will last a lifetime. They will get to use these balls during recess, they will learn those important lessons that are gained during unstructured play outside - teamwork, sharing, and negotiation.
