Haunting Students into Learning Drama!

My students need 200 copies of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" and I want my drama students to analyze her book before seeing the play.

My Students

I will never forget watching the movie, "The Haunting" with my big sister, my big dog, and my big baseball bat, and being completely transfixed by the story. I went on to read the novel when I was older, and I slept with the light on for several nights. I now want to scare my students into learning!

I teach high school drama in New York and will be directing a production of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House" at our high school in November.

Students in general have lost the use of their imaginations -- their world is so visual. I'd like them to discover through her novel just what one's imagination can "conjure" up. My high school is going through tremendous changes right now administratively --they're placing drama, music, and art in the Foreign Language Department! -- and with even less funds than usual, I do not want my students to suffer. My school has over 70 different languages spoken and with multiculturalism and differentiation as the new "buzz words", I want my students to embrace reading for the joy it can bring, not to just take tests and regurgitate soon forgotten information. I teach inclusion classes (with special needs students) and all my classes have an enrollment of 50 students (yes, 50!) with ninth through twelfth graders in every class.

My Project

What can bring a freshman and a senior together better than a good book? With these books (and scripts) we will be able to not only read aloud in class, but I will have them write their own ghost stories, the entire class will draw the inside rooms of Hill House on a large roll of paper, as well as act out scenes from the play. By the time it comes for them to actually see the play onstage, they will have the ability to analyze each character (including Hill House!), critique the performances and the novel's adaptation to the stage, and hopefully have a few sleepless nights in between as their imaginations take hold! [Evil Laugh!]. After each performance, the student actors will run a "Talkback" with the audience and each side can articulate what they have learned. If you've never read the novel, it is an extraordinarily well-written piece of literature. Just the vocabulary alone that they will learn will be worth it all.

I sincerely hope you can help me make this happen for my kids.

The love of reading will last them a lifetime. And with the performance of the play as a culminating activity it will be sheer magic.
