Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Global Citizen Leadership Class is based on community partnerships and real-world solutions to problems. We are a class and club of action, hard work, and building positive relationships with others. Students are challenged to follow their dreams of a better world and are given the tools to see their leadership projects come to fruition.
Our school is located in a very low socioeconomic area, and our students are often in need of great amounts of community assistance just to survive.
My students intimately know all too well the challenges our community is facing due to COVID. We are returning to school toward a new normal and navigating how to make our passion projects a reality given restrictions. My students are engaged, excited, and ready to roll up their sleeves and help to rebuild our school community through service. They need some developing their social and emotional skills after the past two years of purely just relying on survival skills.
My students need hat knitting looms and yarn to create beanies for displaced members of the community, to create a working group with other students and to reduce their stress and anxiety created by the outside world.
My Project
My students are struggling to get back into the social and emotional swing of school because of their lack of overall skills to interact with each other.
I am requesting ten hat knitting looms for my students.
We would like to create a crafting circle that would give students a pathway to service learning by making hats, but more a way into a social community to help deal with pressure, anxiety and just being around people.
My students find stress in just the most basic interaction with others and looming can be an easy way for students to share a calming activity, to have subjects to discuss, to have a reason to be engaged that can help our community at the same time.
Give my students the chance to build their confidence in social and emotional interactions while helping our displaced in the community stay warm this season.
