Many of my students struggle with grade-level reading, and large blocks of text can quickly become overwhelming or discouraging. The graphic novel provides visual supports that help students understand the characters, setting, emotions, and important events while still exposing them to the themes and ideas of George Orwell's original story. Instead of spending all of their energy trying to decode difficult text, students can focus on understanding what is happening and participating in meaningful discussions about the novel.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the graphic novel gives my students an opportunity to experience Animal Farm as an interesting story rather than another boring textbook assignment. The illustrations bring the characters and conflicts to life and provide natural opportunities to practice comprehension, inference, characterization, symbolism, and critical thinking. My goal is for students to become more confident readers who actually want to participate in literature. By giving them an engaging and accessible version of Animal Farm, I can maintain high expectations while providing the scaffolding they need to successfully access the same important ideas and themes as their peers.\r\n\r\nThe coolest thing is that the text is exactly the same as the old novel, so the students are not getting a less-than book, but a more-than book!","fullyFundedDate":1784321333260,"projectUrl":"project/animal-farm-graphic-novels/10301143/","projectTitle":"Animal Farm Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dean","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2362501_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1469653739070","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-allison-dean"},{"teacherId":7291707,"projectId":10271173,"letterContent":"Thank you for generously funding our classroom's interactive notebooks.
