This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are an engaging group that love, love, love to listen to books, look at books, talk, and talk more about books. Their excitement adds such a wonderful element to our day to day learning. Our school is in high poverty, a low-income area so we qualify as a Title I school in which 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. As educators,​ we thrive on keeping our students' learning fun, meaningful, and yet still provide a sense of wonder.

Academically, my class ranges from pre-primer reading to more advanced readers.

To explore and expand our experience with non-fiction text, I am incorporating more hands-on learning with life cycle science activities. When hands-on activities happen to parallel with our text it makes the learning even more concrete.

My Project

We will be hatching chicken eggs in the classroom using the egg incubator, which will provide an up-close learning experience as students explore the life cycle of a chicken from egg to chick. Students will be using observation skills to monitor the progress of eggs, researching chickens, and recording data like temperatures and humidity levels.

This activity will also thread nicely into our social studies standards about the importance of agriculture in our local community and science standards learning about where our food comes from.

This is a unique learning opportunity that will extend further than our first-grade students, as we will partner with third and fourth-grade classes in our school to share our learning about chickens and allow students a chance to hold a baby chick. At the end of this activity, students will be able to identify the life stages from egg to chick and explain the importance of chickens.
