My students need a class set of the text Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We are doing a unit on nature and geography in social studies. I want to pair it with a literary text that aligns.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all different walks of life - race, religion, culture, etc. With these different walks of life come different learning styles.
It is important to accommodate these different learning styles by having the resources necessary for each student in my classroom.
It is so exciting to see the look on a student's face when you see they've made a connection to what's happening in the classroom.
So many of my children may never experience life outside of their bubble. Yet, through literature and experiences, I can help expand their world in a way that will carry with them.
My Project
In our social studies unit on geography and nature, students will be learning about the how the land resources on that land help shape the people. While we will talk about the historical effects of land development on a people, I think it's important that we also apply a literary perspective.
Themes of perseverance, strength, resourcefulness, and survival are all hugely important when discussing the importance of the geography on a civilization.
What better way to get at these themes with a text like Hatchet.
Though many of my students cannot directly connect with the experience of living off the land, they can get some insight into how important our geography is to our way of life.
