In our social studies unit on geography and nature, students will be learning about the how the land resources on that land help shape the people. While we will talk about the historical effects of land development on a people, I think it's important that we also apply a literary perspective. Themes of perseverance, strength, resourcefulness, and survival are all hugely important when discussing the importance of the geography on a civilization. What better way to get at these themes with a text like Hatchet. Though many of my students cannot directly connect with the experience of living off the land, they can get some insight into how important our geography is to our way of life.
