My students need a class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to improve comprehension and fluency.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I've begun reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone aloud to my class of third graders in hopes of sparking a love of literature. And it's working! 3 students have checked out the 3 copies that our library has in stock. They're loving it and would love it so much more if they could follow along.
My students are vivacious, funny, exuberant, intelligent, witty, and they are hungry for knowledge.
Our school is in a high poverty area and is 100% free lunch. My students come from a world of limited access and resources and I want to show them that with more knowledge, comes more resources. They are wonderful storytellers and they deserve to have the best children's literature at their fingertips!
If provided with this class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, we will read them for an approximate time of 10 minutes daily. This book is very challenging for third grade but my students love a challenge. We will use the books to explore literary concepts such as plot, setting, theme, character traits, cause and effect, inferring, visualizing, using context clues and so much more. They are enthralled with what I have read to them so far and I know having their own copy in front of them would only increase engagement further. The books will give us opportunities to extend in to phonics (studying Rowling's "wizard" language is a wonderful phonics opportunity) and writing lessons. At the end of the novel study, we will celebrate with a Potter themed celebration where the students will receive their own letter from Hogwarts as well as a challenge to continue their learning by reading the second book in the Harry Potter series.
Receiving this donation will help the students to develop their literacy skills in all areas: from phonics to comprehension to writing.
It will also start a spark for the love of literature that only grow from here. But most importantly, it will make the students feel as if someone, out in the world, cares about them and cares about their education. I can only imagine the mile-wide grins that I will see if we get the opportunity to receive these books!
