My students need extra incentive. Some students are not motivated by our current rewards, but are motivated by Starbucks and Jamba Juice!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our adult transition class serves students with moderate to severe disabilities between the ages of 18 and 22. We are a high school program located off the main campus so that we can gain real-life experiences in the community. The program focuses on independent living, vocational and safety skills, appropriate and safe behaviors, and functional academics.
These young adults are transitioning from being told what is best for them to advocating for what they want to achieve.
Each student prepares a power point presentation for their yearly IEP meeting and presents it to his/her IEP team. It is a proud moment for them and I am impressed and surprised at each meeting by something they've added themselves, whether it be special effects in the slideshow, a picture of their favorite food, or advocating to take the bus independently. Watching these students find their voice and advocate for their dreams makes me want to work even harder to help them achieve their goals.
My Project
Our classroom uses a privilege card system for positive reinforcement. We would like to take it to the next step by allowing them to redeem their privilege cards for actual gift cards to spend. Students can earn privilege cards by giving their best effort, following class rules, helping others, etc. Now, they redeem cards for time on class ipad, use of cell phones, extra break time during work experience, etc.
Some students are not motivated by our current rewards, but are motivated by places like Starbucks and Jamba Juice.
This may give them more incentive to earn and redeem privilege cards.
