Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school library is a place where all students in our school can come to find books that open their minds to worlds far beyond our small, rural town. The books in this project have recently been named to the 2022-23 Sunshine State Young Reader Award and Sunshine State Young Reader Award Jr. lists. Our Kindergarten-5th grade students thrive as readers when these books are made available to them each year.

Our students treasure the books that are added to the library shelves each year.

Their faces light up with excitement when they check out one of the new titles. Once the students read one of these particular books, they are invited to demonstrate their comprehension skills by taking a quiz on the story. To make it more exciting, students are rewarded with special charms for each title when they pass the quiz, and they receive a special commemorative shirt when they read all 15 of the titles. There is also a special voting day for students that read at least three of the titles that is sponsored by our local election office. This is a great lesson in civic responsibility and the students stand proud with their "I Voted" stickers on this day.

Having these books as part of my library program is a huge motivation for all readers, even the reluctant ones. Obtaining multiple copies of these titles for all our students to access is one of my top priorities. Unfortunately, the cost to obtain multiple copies is more than my media budget allows, so the generosity of donors is more than appreciated.
