This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are in Los Angeles Unified School District. I work at an inner-city, low income, Title I school where 100% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My target population are special needs and general education students who are struggling readers. These children are creative, intellectually sound students who are eager to learn, but learn differently. It is difficult for them to extract meaning through a textbook. Other modalities, including kinesthetic, are required to be in place in order for these students to internalize information.
My Project
“Happy Historians” project will make it possible for my inner city, low income, special needs students to explore and study important events in history using replicas, realia and content relevant literature. It is difficult for this population of students to travel outside of their community, coupled with the difficulties embedded in attempting to bring events to life through a book. Therefore, using the additional tangible and visual learning modalities will increase the attachment to and internalization of the social studies curriculum.
The student will use hands-on materials including, but limited to, maps, games, books, resource boxes, posters, and other materials.
The resource boxes include replicas of items, structures, and other historical features. The hands on materials and the opportunities to play learning games supports learning and understanding. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention, enthusiasm and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
