My students are wonderful! Because of poverty and our rural area, they go without many things, but they work hard and make do with less. I am privileged to work and learn with them, and I do my best to meet what needs I can. Nutritious snacks are one of those needs. As teachers and parents of teens know, teenagers are always hungry. Sometimes I cook for my students, bringing in quick breads, no-bake cookies, or brownies. Students come into my room during breaks and after school to ask, "You got anything to eat, Mrs. Creech?" At the end of the day, I may be their last stop, just in case I have something they can eat before loading the buses or going to after school activities.
This project is for my hungry students, especially those who stay after for tutoring, sports, clubs, and other activities--having a nutritious snack is so important to them, since many do not have parents or food waiting for them when they get home.
This project will provide snacks for many students over several months during next school year. In all, it will provide more than 600 after school snacks, and having those snacks for my hungry students will be a very great thing.
