This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in a credit recovery alternative education High School. Most students that come to my class were not able to focus and were moody and crabby. When I brought chips and snacks one morning, the mood changed almost immediately.

I was able to get students to focus and finish their work.

With a teacher's salary it is not possible to keep this idea sustainable for me. The school provides free lunch, however since most kids are dependent on either long bus rides or a guardian to bring them to school, many students are without a meal till lunch time. Hungry and angry is how I see them in the morning and not interested in academics.

As teachers we are trying all we can for them to get credits, pass their class and graduate. Though this is a simple item in the big task of graduation, I know having a snack in the morning does help and builds trust and compassion among our students who have been through a lot by the time they come to our school.

It is wonderful to see the mood changes and the commitment to finishing their work while they have a bar or a packet of chips we provide. I would be grateful to have this approved as it would be enough to sustain students for the remaining part of the school year. I asked for a cookie mix, so students can do a fund- raiser to earn money from it and buy their own snacks and water cups.
