My Students

Our students range in age from 9-13. I am part of our school's intervention team and we teach all grade levels from K-5 every day. Our students are identified as the most in need of academic and behavioral support to be successful.

So many of them come to school hungry, tired, and emotionally worn out every day.

Very often their experiences before they get to school hinder their success. Many of them feel that our school and their teachers are their safe place.

We are a Title I school. We have about 95 percent of our students that are on the free or reduced-price lunch program. Many students come from economically disadvantaged families with one parent homes or are raised by other family members.

My Project

When students come to school hungry it makes it exceptionally hard for them to concentrate on learning. When this is coupled with negative life experiences many of them have, it creates a very unhappy child!

I have requested water and snacks so my students won't be hungry and thirsty in our classroom.

Think about how you feel when you are hungry or thirsty and are asked to concentrate on the tasks in front of you. We all have trouble focusing and doing our best when our bodies are telling us we need food.

During the school day, many of our students just need a moment, a time out and a small snack that allows them the time to refocus and feed their most basic need. It also allows them to be seen and cared for!
