it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school-based occupational therapist working in Miami, FL, I work with many students who require intervention to improve their fine motor, visual motor, and visual perceptual abilities. These students struggle with handwriting abilities, self-care skills, and overall lack of coordination when engaging in age-appropriate tasks.
My students struggle with the various underlying skills necessary to engage appropriately in pre-handwriting and handwriting skills.
These skills include visual perception skills, fine motor skills, sensory processing and modulation abilities (such as paying attention and sitting in a chair properly) and executive functioning abilities. Improving upon these underlying skills will improve my students' abilities to engage in handwriting tasks.
My Project
This project focuses on the underlying skills required for successful pre-handwriting and handwriting skills. The tweezer games and Play-Doh provide for the skills necessary to build strong hand muscles to hold pencils. The small golf pencils provide for improved stability for little hands. The puzzles, handwriting paper, and perceptual games serve to improve my students' ability to perceive letters for improved copying abilities and spatial awareness. The chairs and cushions address any sensory needs in order to sit at the table. Visual timers serve to improve initiation and executive functioning skills to pace students during independent work.
These underlying skills are necessary to improve upon in order to improve handwriting abilities in school-aged children.
Without these underlying skills, students cannot succeed in the classroom. My job as an occupational therapist is to improve upon these underlying skills to afford my students the ability to grow and learn.
