Hands To Hearts: Learning Through STEM Manipulatives and Creative Communication

My Project

Our first-grade class of 18 diverse learners represents a vibrant mix of backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles. Their natural curiosity, emerging collaborative skills, and creative energy combined with diverse learning needs require multisensory, accessible tools. These students are at a critical developmental stage for building independence, executive function, and a love of learning. We request funding for STEM manipulatives, organized storage bins, recordable buttons, and quality markers to create "Hands to Hearts," a classroom where every child can explore, create, and express themselves authentically.

STEM manipulatives transform abstract concepts into tangible, hands-on learning experiences that first graders need to build foundational understanding.

Organized storage bins teach responsibility while reducing cognitive load, allowing more time for actual learning. Recordable buttons amplify student voice—especially for emerging readers and writers—and provide alternative ways for all learners to contribute meaningfully to projects. Quality markers foster creativity, support fine motor development, and elevate student work. Together, these tools create a multisensory learning environment where differentiated instruction meets collaborative problem-solving, supporting both struggling learners and advanced students.

Our goals are to increase engagement and proficiency in math and science, build independence and collaboration skills, and create an inclusive classroom where all learners feel valued and empowered. This project will establish organized learning centers, deepen conceptual understanding through hands-on exploration, and foster a culture of creativity where first graders develop confidence, communication skills, and a genuine love of learning.
