Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all English Language learners who are mainstreamed (in a classroom with on grade level, English speaking peers) for all but 90 minutes of their school day. They receive 90 minutes daily of intensive English at their level. In the beginning stages of English acquisition, they do a great deal of listening and are taught to distinguish sounds. They also benefit from high repetition. They are also taught the grammar beginning with the present tense verb be, am, is and are.

Students in my class come from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Sudan, Egypt, Yemen, Poland and Russia.

My students are eager to learn. In a small group setting when instructed at their level each and every one of them participates and takes educational and linguistic risks.

According to our most recent school profile 17.2% of our students are ELL, 80.6% are eligible for free or reduced rate meals, 14.9% have disabilities, 15.3% have chronic absenteeism, 9.4% are African American, 59.3% are Hispanic and 27.6% are white.

My Project

Students will be able to manipulate and match cards containing pictures and words to show mastery of the opposite and synonym concepts. Using the bingo games will reinforce vocabulary and grammar in a game like way. The presentation of the material is much more engaging than a worksheet and kids will be able to work together and reinforce social skills while learning literacy concepts.

The sound/letter tubs will be great for children who come from countries who are not familiar with our sound/symbol alphabet.

All students will increase their vocabulary learning names for the objects in each tub that they will also be able to manipulate and handle.

Overall the use of these materials games will facilitate learning in fun, meaningful and engaging ways. On behalf of my students, thank you for your consideration!
