My Students

We are a Chinese immersion classroom and during the initial COVID lockdown, students didn't get enough instruction hours in Chinese, nor any chance to practice. Online learning wasn't ideal for language learning either since learning a language requires a lot of social interaction and lots of opportunities to produce language. As a result, my students are behind in their language learning, and I think some additional resources could help with their language development.

I teach science and because of social distancing requirements, we were not able to do a lot of hands-on activities, yet hands-on experiments and solid objects (rather than pictures and videos) are essential for learning and developing interest in science.

Thus I would like to provide some solid, hands-on experiences as well as engineering activities for my students.

My Project

The Chinese dictionaries will help facilitate independent learning in Chinese -- students will be able to refer to them whenever they need to.

The microscopes are to help students understand that there is a microscopic wold that we can't normally see with our eyes.

This concepts is essential for two fifth-grade science units -- the Ecosystem unit which involves understanding decomposers like bacteria and fungi, and the Properties of Matter unit which stress that matter is made of particles too small for the eyes to see. Along with the earth model and the solar system model, students will gain a more solid grasp on otherwise abstract topics.

The Kiwico kits are to make possible an engineering experience that students lack during the lockdown/social distancing periods. Students will be able to create, observe, analyze, and adjust their own machines and apply various Engineering ideas.

The indoor garden station is to help students better understand plants' lives and their roles as producers in an ecosystem, which is an essential topic in 5th grade science.
