Hands-On Science for Hands-On Learners

Help me give my students headphones, science kits, and interactive tools like a solar system model and rocket launcher to make hands-on science exciting and accessible for my class of students with disabilities.

My Project

I teach an awesome group of 5th graders in a self-contained classroom at a Title I-funded school in Dorchester. Most of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and many are dealing with a lot outside of school. On top of that, they have learning disabilities that already make school harder. Because of scheduling issues, they don’t go to science with the 5th grade science teacher, so I teach it in our room. That means if I don’t find a way to make science happen, they miss out on even more due to circumstances that are out of their control.

The solar system model helps explain things like day and night and the Earth’s orbit, stuff that’s really hard to picture in your head without a model (especially for our learners who already have challenges with abstract thinking and understanding things they can’t physically see).

The plant kits and heat lamps will let us grow things and see how light and water affect plants. We’ll use the charcoal and humidity domes to build mini greenhouses and learn how environments work. The pinwheels are perfect for talking about wind, energy, and weather, and the thermometers will help us measure temperature in our experiments. The headphones will help students focus when they’re using text-to-speech on their computers to access reading content or working independently. The rocket kit, magnetic science sets, puzzles, and Wooly Willy games will let them explore science ideas in ways that feel like play but still build real understanding.

Half my class takes the alternate MCAS and half take the grade-level one, so I’m constantly planning for different levels and entry points. These materials give me a way to teach big science ideas to all my students in ways that actually make sense and feel exciting, not frustrating.
