Help me give my students whiteboards, magnetic letters, and other materials they need to engage in reading and language arts instruction during distance learning.
My students are 3-5th graders in a self-contained special education classroom. They all have autism and/or speech and language difficulties; they're learning the academic, classroom readiness, and social skills they need to thrive in a classroom environment and spend time in general education classrooms with their peers.
My students are inquisitive, passionate about their specific interests and topics.
While they may not be traditional learners, they are all brilliantly and uniquely engaged in acquiring knowledge across a broad range of topics.
I want my classroom to be a learning space where every student feels safe and engaged in joyful learning. It is a bustling and dynamic environment designed to meet the sensory and academic needs of a diverse group of learners. My classroom is a place where learners can explore and grow.
My Project
This has been a year like no other, especially for students! My 3-5th grade special education students have been engaged in distance learning since last March- with no end in sight. We're spending more time in front of screens than ever; one of the biggest challenges is finding activities that are engaging- and visible over video!
My students need magnetic hands-on materials that they can use for distance learning reading and language instruction.
When we're learning in the classroom, they have access to a variety of materials to support different learning modalities- hands-on, paper-and-pencil, books & audiobooks. When we abruptly left the classroom last March, we left all those materials behind. While we're all trying our best, we miss having a variety of learning opportunities! Even paper-and-pencil activities are difficult- have you ever tried to look at an assignment written in pencil via webcam? It's impossible to see! Magnetic hands-on materials will allow my students to use hands-on materials, then hold up what they've done to show teachers. My students have been wonderful, enthusiastic, and engaged learners during distance learning, but they are missing hands-on learning opportunities
