My Students

I hate math.......this is the cry of many second graders! In Kindergarten and First grade there are many hand on activities to teach basic numbers, colors, shapes and patterning but by second grade students are handed a book and expected to "do" math on paper.

This is not the way I want to teach math anymore because math is a hard subject for many students.

If I can help kids to be excited about math again it will follow them into higher grades. Math in second grade is taught basically from a book in 2D and has almost no hands on time for students. I want to create a math classroom that allows students to work at centers with many different kinds of manipulatives. Dice, fraction pieces, clocks, money and games will be the answer to a boring math book. This will allow them to work on their own and in small groups in the areas that they struggle in the most. I will use the math workshop grouping concept to group students by their strengths. This will allow me to work in small group, one on one and with the whole class.

My Project

Overall our classroom will be a place where students work together to learn math in a fun environment. I know hand on activities, manipulatives and grouping will help our students achieve better grades and improve their attitudes about math. These positive attitudes can follow them through their entire school career.

American students need to improve their math skills and there is no better way than to let them have fun while they learn.

Hands on math with grouping is the best way to reach all math levels in my classroom and help them in years to come
