The students at our school come from varying cultures and backgrounds. The demographics of our school is primarily 50% African American, 40% Hispanic, and 10% other. Students here have faced many challenges in their few years of schooling and many have felt the disappointment of not getting the help they need from their public schools. Our school, for many of them, is their last hope to succeed in the education system before moving on to middle and high schools.
Many families here are low income and many parents work to meet their child's basic needs.
This leaves little time for them to work on school work at home with their children and ultimately understand the academic help that their child may need. Thus it is our mission to provide as many materials and outlets as possible to support our community with this problem, and enable success for all of our students to have a brighter future.
My Project
So many students struggle to understand the concepts of math. Most of my students have parents that have a fear of math and are unable to help them at home. It is my hope to bring some fun, hands on experiences, to help them become more engaged and increase understanding on mathematical concepts. Large numbers and fractions can be very scary to students. In order to help alleviate these fears we use visual representations with base 10 blocks to bring an abstract concept into a concrete experience. Students use the blocks to represent and manipulate both large numbers and fractions.
Engaging projects reduce the fear of math and make it meaningful.
When students use manipulatives such as place value blocks it gives meaning to their learning. Now that there is not only meaning in their learning, they are more likely to retain the information all while having FUN. If learning is FUN it doesn't feel like work.
