Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach a majority African American population of strong, opinionated students who are enthusiastic towards learning. They love to come to my math classes because they say they have fun in my class. One of my classes is made up of 14 boys and 1 girl and I have to literally chase them out of my classroom to go to gym.

I find that they are especially enthused if I have them use technology to teach or reinforce a concept that they have learned.

One of my classes especially is very motivated and they are very enthusiastic about learning math on a deeper level.

My Project

Learning algebra can be hard for 12 year olds if they have no point of reference. Having the opportunity to manipulate with the right tools can enhance the learning of a difficult topic.

It is always difficult for them to solve an equation and understand the idea of balancing an equation.

Using algebra tiles will greatly improve this learning. I have never had enough for a complete class set so that my students can have individualized learning so these will be greatly appreciated.

I believe in doing everything I can to make math come alive in my students eyes in my classroom.
