My Project

I've been teaching special education for the past 8 years but will be embarking on a new journey next year, 2024-2025, and I will be teaching Kindergarten instead. I've been participating in a math professional development course about the 8 mathematical practices in the younger grades. There is a large emphasis on mathematical discourse, and working back and forth between concrete, representational, and abstract math practices.

I know these math manipulatives will support our earliest learners to be able to represent math in a variety of ways, talk with their classmates about solving the problems and help them enjoy, investigate, and understand math at a deeper level rather than memorizing rules or procedures that they can not apply on new and novel problems.

After working with the lowest population in the school, I have seen firsthand how math manipulatives engage and invite mathematicians at all levels in math tasks. I believe that differentiation in the classroom is essential to meet all of my learners' individual needs.
