Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are hardworking middle schoolers who often struggle with abstract math concepts but thrive when they can see, touch, and manipulate their learning. At our Title I school in the South Bronx, many of my students have gaps in their foundational math skills and need concrete tools to build understanding.

Right now, we lack the hands-on manipulatives that make complex concepts like fractions, place value, and geometry accessible to all learners, especially my students with disabilities who benefit most from multisensory approaches.

This project will provide essential math tools that transform abstract ideas into tangible learning experiences. Base ten blocks will help students visualize place value and operations with whole numbers and decimals. Fraction tiles and magnetic fraction circles will make equivalent fractions and operations concrete rather than confusing. Linking cubes allow students to build arrays, explore patterns, and solve problems kinesthetically. Geometric shapes bring 3D geometry to life, while number lines support integer operations and algebraic thinking.

Calculators ensure that students who struggle with computation can still access grade-level problem-solving, while rulers and foam tiles support measurement and area concepts. Each manipulative addresses a critical gap between what students are expected to understand and what they can currently grasp through traditional instruction alone.

With these tools, math becomes something my students can explore, experiment with, and ultimately master—building the confidence and skills they need to succeed in middle school and beyond.
