This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students amaze me every day. As an elementary special education teacher at an urban school in Indianapolis, I get to work with students who face more challenges than the average student. My students don't let that stop them. They work harder and longer than their peers. They put a smile on my face every day.
My students don't let their disabilities define them.
I work hard to develop a growth mindset in my students. They believe that a positive attitude and hard work can take them anywhere.
My Project
My students struggle with learning abstract math concepts like multiplication or division algorithms. They need concrete materials to work with for these tougher skills.
They need manipulatives such as the hands-on regrouping kits to help them develop their conceptual understanding of multiplying or dividing larger numbers.
The fraction multipliers will help them visualize and understand what happens when you multiply two fractions. Fractions are another abstract concept that requires a lot of time working with hands-on materials to develop a strong understanding of their meaning.
The decimal operations kit, decimal blocks, and place value coins will help deepen their number sense. The snap and slide number bonds will help them learn to decompose and compose numbers, which helps them become flexible thinkers.
