Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are navigating a world that is new, unfamiliar, and far from the place they have called home for their whole lives until very recently. They are brave and courageous scholars, learning English and engaging in the critical thinking skills and demanding content of their same-aged peers. Many of my students have had very limited or no education in their home language.
My students are newcomers to the United States, having arrived at the United States sometime in the last year or two, and are learning English as a second or third language.
A majority of my students are from Central America or Yemen. Our middle school is a small school by design, located in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. We have a large English Language Learner population, about 45% of our school, and 92% of our population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. My students are incredibly hard workers and inspire me every day.
My Project
For the first time, our school will be offering a foundational math course for our middle school, students with an interrupted formal education (SIFE students) who have recently immigrated to the US. I have the pleasure of teaching this class next year! When our school designed our program for our growing English Language Learner (ELL) population, we decided to mainstream our ELL students in grade level math courses. However, we have found that this model is not supporting our SIFE students, who lack foundational math literacy and skills. They do not have the basic skills to be able to access the grade level math standards.
The materials in this project will provide students with the hands on manipulatives needed to develop a deep conceptual understanding of the math concepts and skills taught in this foundational math course.
The goal of the course is to provide students with the language and foundational math skills so that they are successful in grade level math classes the following year. Our students are eager to learn, and these math materials will allow them a visual and kinesthetic way of mastering these essential math concepts. With access to Base 10 Blocks, Fraction Tiles, Hands on Place Value kits, Cuisenaire Rods, and other math manipulatives, students will develop a concrete understanding and mastery of math standards focused on place value, operations and fractions. I look forward to seeing them feel successful and have multiple ways of demonstrating their learning in math.
