Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children in my classroom are a diverse mix of students that need extra support. I am an intervention teacher and meet with struggling students to focus on building reading, math, and writing skills. I work with students from across our building which spans Kindergarten through 8th grade.
My students often have a multitude of needs and it is my job to meet them right where they are and provide the support to make them feel successful in school.
I have a passion for helping these kids in anyway I can and providing with the tools they need to be learners.
My Project
My project centers around something that has been lacking in my instruction in the last few years. Students come to me to get remediation in math. I am given no program or tools in which to complete the monumental task of teaching these students and filling in all the gaps.
Math manipulatives have been proven to help students make abstract problems concrete.
When a student struggles in math, they often are unable to conceptualize problems and something tangible like a manipulative in their hands bridges that gap. I have done much research on math intervention and one common thread is that students need to see it in front of them in order to build the skills necessary to become successful mathematicians.
