My shining first graders are vibrant, curious, and eager to explore. They have put forth tremendous effort with distance learning! We know what it is like to work in front of a screen all day. Imagine what it is like for our youngest learners?! My students have shown up to our virtual classroom eager to learn new things and have put in so much effort staying focused and engaged. They enjoy creating audio recordings and videos to share their amazing thinking. Our virtual community and wellness session is one of their favorite times of the day. They get to share something about themselves and learn from other classmates. They truly show up in our classroom community as shining stars!
My students need more resources to make the most of distance learning.
One third of my students are English Language Learners. Most, if not all, come from low-income families. They have rich cultural backgrounds and unique needs. Despite the challenges that their families face, my students are resilient and loving. If they could, they would give you a big warm hug for thinking about them!
My Project
Equity in education is what we strive for. This requires understanding the unique challenges and barriers faced by individual students or by populations of students and providing additional supports to help them overcome those barriers. Providing quality resources to meet students' individual needs, especially during a new learning landscape, is part of equity in education. Your donation will provide my students with magnetic whiteboards, magnetic letters, workbooks, story books, and bilingual reading book sets to address specific student needs.

We know that our young learners, learn best when they are in a physical classroom setting. One of the things they get to do in a classroom is work with manipulatives. Let's bring some of those hands-on materials to the students' homes to enhance their distance learning! During our virtual classroom sessions, my students will be able to build words with the magnetic letters and write sentences on the whiteboards. This will allow them to enhance their phonics skills in an engaging way and give them continuous opportunities to practice their handwriting.
The workbooks and picture books will be given to some of my ELLs and students that are not able to easily access online learning. I have newcomers that are getting acclimated to living in a different country and acquiring the English language. The bilingual book sets will link what they know already to the new language that they are learning. Some of my students are not able to access online learning regularly because of barriers such as unstable housing and limited technology knowledge. The workbooks and picture books will be readily available to them at home, so they can continue to learn daily.
