Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

All of my students are striving to reach their speech and language goals every day in both speech sessions and in the classroom. I want to support this my finding therapy materials they can connect with and enjoy. One of my students loves dinosaurs and has made the most progress when we incorporate that into our sessions! Creating opportunities for hands on learning is crucial for my young learners for a multitude of reasons.

Engagement, concrete experience and development of fine motor skills are just the beginning.

Hands-on activities encourage children to explore, experiment, and problem-solve independently. They learn to think creatively and develop critical thinking skills as they encounter challenges and find solutions through trial and error. Hands on toys and materials also allow for an increase in language during collaboration and interaction with peers, which fosters social skills such as cooperation, communication, and teamwork. Additionally, successfully completing hands-on tasks boosts children's self-esteem and confidence.

Using small toys to teach skills such as categorization, labeling and requesting are far more engaging then pictures or words. It helps foster a sense of fun and not just work. My students all work hard in order to earn prizes that they can take home and share with their families. This helps open the lines of communication and increases success for the child.
