I am the PreK-5th grade computer teacher at my school. This DonorsChoose.org project is for the youngest students, several students have disabilities and would benefit from the touchscreen.
This project will reach my two preschool classes and four kindergarten classes.
My preschool class consists of students with special needs between the ages 3 and 5 years old. Each student in these two classes has an IEP and are working hard in my class. Some of the disabilities make it difficult to use the computer and the mouse. Some kindergarten students would benefit from using the touchscreen for a variety of reasons such as disabilities and frustration.
The advantage of having a a touchscreen Chromebook is that it will allow me to create learning stations based on student's abilities and needs. The ease of use of a touchscreen would be helpful to engage students while learning to use a digital device and help eliminate frustration.
Some students are using digital devices for the first time and, at times, may only receive exposure to this type of technology at school.
My Project
Having a touchscreen Chromebook will allow my students that have disabilities to participate in enjoying and exploring educational activities and games while practicing and promoting digital skills.
Students at this young age of 3-6 years old learn through play and I do not want their disability to hinder this process.
A Chromebook will provide a new learning station that will allow students to promote both the academic and the digital skills necessary to transition students to a computer and mouse.
These types of academic learning games are not available on iPads but can be accessed easily through the use of the Chromebook.
