I teach in a school that is very diverse, over 30% of the students are English language learners and 90% of the students are Black, Asian, Hispanic, or identify as two or more races. Almost 80% of the school population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
I want all my learners to feel reflected in the classroom, regardless of their background.
With how much time my students spend in my classroom, it begins to feel like their second home. I utilize personal learning, flexible seating, diverse books, and technology in my classroom to personalize my students' learning and create a classroom environment that supports their needs.
Personalized learning allows me to create a space that fosters independence, choice, responsibility, and encourages social and emotional growth.
My students are passionate, creative, engaged learners who thrive in a personalized environment and are ready to take on the world!
My Project
I am always looking for ways to increase my students' independence and ability to participate in meaningful, hands on learning. These magnetic letter kits and whiteboards will allow my students to practice their phonics and sight words in a variety of hands-on ways. They are also portable so that students can use them at any of our flexible seating options.
This will allow students to use them during small group at my teacher table, but then also for independent learning.
The new chairs will give students a more comfortable option at our low tables. I currently have cushions on the floor, but these provide backs which will be a nice option. They are also easy to move and stack which makes them very versatile. Allowing students to choose where they learn best fosters their independence and self-awareness in their learning.
